Offered for sale is a rare and historically significant Alfred Hollis & Son double rifle, chambered in the powerful .450/.400 Nitro Express, bearing the serial number 15040. Crafted between 1897 and 1919, this exceptional firearm hails from the esteemed London-based gunmaker, known for its prestigious royal warrant as "Gunmakers to H.R.H. The Duke of Connaught" (Prince Arthur, third son of Queen Victoria, Duke from 1874-1942). The rifle’s action is adorned with finely engraved floral and scroll patterns, showcasing the superior craftsmanship of the era. The barrels, marked “KRUPP STAHL ESSEN,” are crafted from high-quality German Krupp steel, renowned for its durability and precision, and bear Birmingham proof marks, including a distinctive diamond-shaped crown stamp, affirming authenticity and quality.

This Alfred Hollis & Son double rifle is proudly engraved with “A. HOLLIS & SON, LONDON,” reflecting the firm’s prominence, with historical ties to Dunster House, Mincing Lane (1897), and later 15 and 28 Victoria Street (1903-1919). Originally proofed for black powder (marked “BP”), it was likely re-proofed for nitro use to accommodate the .450/.400 cartridge introduced in 1899, blending historical authenticity with practical versatility for big game hunting. The sidelock action and bores remain in very good condition despite minor barrel wear consistent with its age, making it both a functional firearm and a collector’s treasure.

Alfred Hollis, son of Ebenezer Hollis, established the firm’s legacy, which included a stint in Fort Bombay, India, around 1884, where he operated as a gunmaker under the sanction of The Earl of Dufferin, Viceroy of India (1884-1888). The firm’s gun case labels from this period proudly declared their royal warrant and succession to W & E Hollis and E Hollis, Gun, Pistol & Rifle Makers to The British Government, established in 1796. Known for their “By Royal Warrant Special” cartridges, including the Green and Crimson varieties, Alfred Hollis & Son cemented their reputation for excellence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

With its royal provenance, exceptional craftsmanship, and historical significance, this Alfred Hollis & Son double rifle is a standout addition to any serious firearms collection. Perfect for display or, with proper inspection, use in the field, it embodies the legacy of a distinguished gunmaker tied to both British and Indian history. Serious inquiries are welcome—don’t miss the opportunity to own this exquisite piece of gunmaking heritage.
