A fantastic piece of Colt history and a revolver that doesn’t come through the doors every day.

The Colt New Service was Colt’s large frame, double action revolver, first introduced in 1898. During the First World War, New Service revolvers chambered in .455 were acquired by Britain for service use, officially designated the Pistol, Colt, .455 inch, 5.5 inch barrel Mk. I. British Empire examples were marked “NEW SERVICE .455 ELEY” on the barrel, as seen on this revolver.

This particular example, serial number 115010, is a WW1 era revolver and features the 5.5″ barrel, lanyard ring, original style Colt grips and period inspection markings. Comparable surviving examples show the same crossed pennant and inspection markings associated with British service New Service revolvers.

At some stage during its life, this revolver has been reblued and today presents in very good condition. The refinish means it isn’t being represented as retaining its original factory finish, but it remains a very attractive example of a now century old Colt.

For the Colt collector, military firearms enthusiast or anyone who simply appreciates the workmanship of early 20th-century revolvers, this is a particularly interesting piece.
