Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield - Mark I
Originally a Martini Henry Mark III rifle first class manufactured at the Royal Small Arms Factory (RSAF), Enfield in 1879 as a class I in .450 calibre with serial number 258.
With the introduction of the Magazine Lee Metford and the success of the Enfield rifling, conversions of Martini Henry rifles to the .303 calibre were undertaken. Many of the Martini Enfield conversion contracts were colonial orders who supplied or exchanged .450 Martini Henry rifles.
This rifle was officially converted in 1895 again by the Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield and reissued as a Martini Enfield Mark I with serial number 6379. Most conversions were directed by the War Office to Birmingham Small Arms, London Small Arms and the Henry Rifle Barrel Co.
Clear and distinct RSAF Enfield roundel with Mark I and I stamp (first class) on the butt. Disc shows that the rifle was issued to New South Wales.
The rifle has honest service wear consistent with its age and retains its original configuration as when it was reissued. It has not been refinished. A small wood repair to the rear of the for-end.
Bore is fair and shoots with the action tight and functioning correctly.
An above average example of a military issued colonial Martini Enfield.
