Here we have an absolutely amazing and rare piece with a fascinating history.

This is an original Mauser Model 1871 Cavalry Carbine in 11.15x60R Mauser, (.43 Mauser) produced by Dreyse in Sömmerda, Germany. This is the same Dreyse that produced the famous Dreyse needle rifle. The Dreyse Needle gun was revolutionary in the fact that it was the first breechloading rifle to use bolt action to open and close the chamberDreyse manufactured only a very small quantity of M1871 Mauser long rifles, and even fewer carbines. From what I can find, the highest serial number recorded is in the 5XX range. I have been informed that the S/N on this rifle indicates this most likely would have been the first year of production.

On the tang Chinese characters can be seen, which, based on markings and historical records, indicate that this rifle was sent to China and likely used by Chinese troops during the Boxer Rebellion (1899–1901). After that, the rifle was brought to Australiamost likely by an Australian soldier present at the time or possibly by a Chinese immigrant seeking a new life.

The Rifle:

The rifle is in very good condition for its age. There is no rust, and everything on the rifle is completely matchingincluding each screw; some parts have been replaced on the bolt but the main bolt body and bolt face are matching. For some reason someone at some point has added a “0” to the S/N but this is certainly not an original addition and may be disregarded as its significants is null and void. The action functions smoothly and as intended; however, the flag safety will only come halfway up. This is probably an easy fix, but I am personally not willing to mess with this particular piece due to its rarity. The bolt face is surprisingly clean for its age, and the barrel is mostly shiny, in very good to almost excellent condition.

The beautiful German walnut stock is in pretty good condition, with typical and expected bumps, bruises, and age-related wear (I'm sure you’d look a little rough after 150 odd years too!). A couple of minor hairline cracks are present, which could be easily dealt with if that sort of thing bothers you. The Prussian eagle cartouche is still very clear and stands out beautifully against the wonderful grain of the solid German walnut.

All in all, this is an incredibly rare and historically significant firearm. Original 1871 cavalry carbines are already quite rare, but the manufacturer and provenance of this example, in my opinion, would put this into the category of a museum grade piece, or at the very least, a high-quality investment piece.
