London Small Arms Company Magazine Lee Enfield Rifle (MLE) Mark I* between 1899 and 1905, and who produced the least at approximately 74,000.
This company was awarded regular contracts with the War Office and also produced the service pattern rifles for Colonial Governments. This rifle manufactured in 1902 would have been one ordered by the New South Wales Government and awarded by the War Office to LSA Co. This rifle has the NSW ownership stamp on the top of the barrel knox and the rack number of 7383 which is also stamped on the butt. There is a 6 31 stamp (butt) which could be an inspection date whilst in stores. The for-end has been repaired.
At some time in 1930 the original barrel was replaced with a Lithgow manufactured MLE barrel (no Lithgow stamp) with the correct MLE front sight blade later refurbished by a slot cut to fit a SMLE front sight blade. The barrel has faint Sold out of Service stamps (applied to weapons previously in Government service). The barrel may have been part of a refurbishment program undertaken to refresh rifles held in stores.
Matching numbers to action, bolt and barrel. The butt has the LSA company roundel.
All the metal parts of the rifle, bolt, dust cover front dial sight, rear volley sight, magazine and trigger guard all bear the X which is the LSA ownership and proofing mark.
An interesting rifle that was produced on order for the New South Wales Government and issued to that State and as per other MLE's and perhaps kept in storage into the 1930’s. Some were issued to the Australian Civilian Military Forces in 1939/1940 as weapons for defence.
Rifle will be dispatched though On Target Enogerra and the quote is $120 (due to length) to your nominated dealer. Additional pictures can be provided on request.
